Leon Russell album cover article
Area artist gets ahead
Local artist Ed Volonnino thinks he just might have carved a new niche for himself as sculptor of the singing stars.
One of Volonnino's carved wooden heads graces the cover of Leon Russell's new album, "Solid State."
A fan of Russell's blend of rock 'n' roll and country music, Volonnino carved the singer's likeness, complete with "bulgy eyes and a beard," he said.
He presented the sculpture to Russell when he sang at Brassy's last March.
He learned Russell collects sculptures, and was pleased with the piece. Several months later Russell's manager called and said they planned to use the statue on a poster. They later decided to use it on an album cover. Russell hand painted the piece.
Volonnino will receive $100, a credit on the album and an autographed copy of "Solid State," he said.
He also was invited to meet Russell at a September concert in Gainesville.
Who knows, it might lead to other jobs with singers like Willie Nelson, he said.
"Solid State" is available at area record stores and the album's single, "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues," can be heard on the radio.
The 26-year-old Volonnino has sculpted in wood, clay and stone for 10 years.
He can be reached at his business, Ed's Heads, at 725-2194.
